Comparison of a Trip

Here is an example of how a trip can be organised through Trail Sharing or by other means.

We believe we provide fantastic whole-of-journey value for money and convenience so we have also compared ourselves against three other methods of completing a trip; a shuttle service, a car relocation service and bringing a second vehicle.

For this comparison we have made a few assumptions:

Two groups looking to complete the Paparoa trail,
One group is biking, the other tramping,
3 people per vehicle, driving from Nelson,
Fuel price: $2.70/litre, fuel consumption: 10l/100km
Prices for other services are the cheapest available at time of writing

Trail Sharing

1) Two drivers connect with each other to arrange a journey that suits them

2) They drive from Nelson and meet at a cafe in Murchison to exchange vehicles

3) They drive the other persons vehicle to their start of the trail

4) They complete the trail at their own pace, returning keys as they meet on the trail (or through lockboxes on their vehicles)

5) After arriving back to their own vehicles, they can drive straight home

This journey results in each party driving on average 525km, approximately $140 in fuel. As you're an early member, the services of our platform are currently all free!

Total journey cost per party: $140

Total journey time: 7:00 hours

Shuttle Service

1) They drive from Nelson to the start of the trail head.

2) They complete the trail and wait at the other end for a shuttle.

3) They take the shuttle back to their vehicle.

4) After arriving back to their own vehicles, they can drive home

The values below depend on which trail head the user drives too. To allow accurate comparison, trips to both trail heads have been calculated and the average value listed.

This journey results in a party driving 525km, approximately $140 in fuel.

Shuttle cost: $80pp = $240 and 1 hours drive

Total journey cost: $380

Total journey time: 8:00 hours

Car Relocation Service

1) They drive from Nelson to the start of the trail head.

2) They place their keys in a

complete the trail and wait at the other end for a shuttle.

3) They take the shuttle back to their vehicle.

4) After arriving back to their own vehicles, they can drive home

This journey results in a parties vehicle driving 600km, approximately $160 in fuel.

Car Relocation: $140 per vehicle

Bringing a Second Vehicle

1) They drive two vehicles from Nelson to their trail end

2) They drop one vehicle at the trail end and all drive back to the trail head

3) They complete the trail at their own pace and arrive to their deposited vehicle

4) They drive back to the remaining vehicle

5) After arriving back to their own vehicles, they can drive home

This journey results in the vehicles driving 1,200km, approximately $320 in fuel.
